About Us

badge-ranks

Pack 171 provides a full scouting program to boys in the Grimes Iowa community. We have been in existence for over 50 years and we have a membership of approximately 18 boys and 8 adult leaders, making us one of the oldest Packs in the state of Iowa. Our Charter Organization is the Grimes Lions Club found at http://www.grimeslions.com/.

Pack 171 is joined in the Scouting tradition by Grimes Troop 171 (boys ages 11-18). Troop 171 represents Grimes with a large number of boys, many of whom have achieved the ultimate distinction of Eagle Scout rank.

How It Works

badge-ranks

Our main group is called a pack, and the pack is made up of several smaller groups called dens. Boys are members of dens according to their grade:

  • Lion Den – Kindergarteners
  • Tiger Den – First Graders
  • Wolf Den – Second Graders
  • Bear Den – Third Graders
  • Webelos I Den – Fourth Graders
  • Webelos II / Arrow of Light Den – Fifth Graders

Our program year starts in the fall and runs throughout the school year. You can join at any time, and you can start at any grade level.

For more information, check out the national Cub Scouting site.

What We Do

Here are some of the activities we do:

  • Camping – Our pack loves to camp with den campouts throughout the year and a family campouts in the spring.
  • Pinewood Derby – Build and race your own car!
  • Nature hikes and field trips depending on your den – you might visit a fire station, police station, or a museum!
  • Service Projects
  • And of course, fun den meetings and pack meetings every month!

So why should you join Pack 171? To have FUN of course! You’ll also get to learn and do cool things throughout the year. Maybe you’ll go to camp and learn how to use a map and compass, or go on a nature hike and learn about the local animals and plants. There’s lots to do! For you parents, you might be wondering why your son should become a Cub Scout… well, the Purposes of Cub Scouting say it best:

Volunteers

Volunteers are the backbone of the Scouting community. We have an extremely active and well run Cub Scout Pack and this is because of the family members who volunteer their time and talents to help keep Scouting strong in our community. The pack holds monthly committee meetings for the parents, where we plan upcoming events and continually try to improve the experience for our Scouts.

Any help is always appreciated and without volunteers, there would be no Cub Scouts.

Boy Scouts

Older children (completed fifth grade or above) can join the Boy Scouts. Boy Scouting is an exciting program for youth and adults who want to share in the development of young people. For more info on this program, click here.
